The Brief

University House became the home for the university's business school in 2004 after having been extensively refurbished and extended to provide teaching and research facilities. It is located in grounds in the conservation area of Edgbaston, Birmingham.

In partnership with Morgan Sindall we worked to refurbish the historic University House listed building and furnish the new 4 storey academics building.

The Solution

The key was to compliment the old with the new. The existing building, whist retaining existing features such as antique fireplaces, book casing and furniture, required modern planning and designs. In comparison the new build with stripped back raw materials of veneered wooden panelling and exposed concrete supports required traditional touches. This enabled the seamless transition between buildings creating a link between the two environments.

Project Insight

We worked closely with Architects Glancy Nicholls, the main contractor Morgan Sindall and the University’s Estates team to create traditional yet vibrant, social, learning and office spaces.

Utilising products from Narbutas, Orangebox and Orn we were able to create bespoke elements within the furniture designs thus enabling the history and future to be selected in the scheme.

Particular time was spent to ensure the University staff had a welcoming and inspiring space to work and we feel the success of the project was due to the collaboration of all parties.
